Home VS Gym

personal gym Some guys honestly like gyms , some regard them as a necessary evil, and some would rather train in the basement playing the rocky soundtrack very loud. Here are some factors that go into the choice you make…

  • Cost

  • For less than a thousand dollars , you can set up a pretty cool home gym with an olympic weight set , a adjustable weight bench , a power rack for doing heavy squats and bench presses , dumbbells and a few work out tools. Of course , in alot of cities $1,000 up front buys you a multiple year gym membership as well.
    Advantage : Gym

  • Motivation

  • Here’s the biggest complaint home exercisers voice. “How do I stay pumped to pump when I”m surrounded by four walls?” If your asking yourself this , you should probably join a gym. At a good gym, the lights , room temperature and surrounding is designed to get your adrenaline flowing. Of course at a bad gym you may find lights too harsh , room too cold or hot and people who are annoying.
    Advantage : Gym

  • Safety

  • Since 1996 theres been 11 reported deaths in home gyms , the most common cause being asphyxiation due to the bench press. Imagine trying to lift a weight and it comes collapsing down onto your chest then to your neck. Not a very pleasant thought. Fortunately there’s a fix. Set your bench at a slight incline , this won’t affect the trajectory of the lift as much but allows you to roll the bar downill if you leave it on your chest. The toes seem to be the body part most prone to weight lifting injury.
    Advantage : Gym

  • Convenience

  • If there’s a gym in your office building , it clearly wins. But if thats not a company perk and theres no gym on the route and you have to get out of your way then the home option may work better. It’s hard enough to get a good 45 minute workout without adding in drive time.
    Advantage : Tie

  • Atmosphere

  • The music in the gym will suck. And as stated earlier , if you don’t like people much in general you’ll really hate the average american gym.
    Advantage : Home

  • Hygiene

  • If there’s one thing worst than other people’s music , it’s other people’s sweat. Gyms have gotten better in the recent years , providing members with hand towels or requiring that they bring their own. Still , one gorilla wearing a stringy tank in july is all it takes to leave the bench soaked in toxic plasm. Your shower at home might be simillary infected with microbes but atleast their your microbes.
    Advantage : Home

  • The Winner

  • The Gym , but their music really sucks. Bring your walkman.
